Multiple Teams · Four Comets Sign National Letters of Intent

The Marion L. Steele High School Athletic Department held a press event on Wednesday, November 11th at 2:00 pm in the Creative Learning Center.  We recognized Dylan Bailey (Ohio Dominican University/Baseball), McKenzie Cornwell (University of Akron/Softball), K.K. Hazelgrove (Cleveland State University/Women’s Soccer), and Sydney Schaeffer (Bowling Green State University/Women’s Soccer) who signed a National Letter of Intent with NCAA Division I and II Institutions.

At the event, we introduced these four Student-Athletes, we gave information on them, they signed the appropriate documents, and they were made available to the media for any questions/answers.  Below you will find information on these four Student-Athletes.

Dylan Bailey, Ohio Dominican University, Baseball
Following his High School Career, Dylan will continue his academic and athletic careers at Ohio Dominican University, an NCAA Division II school in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference.  Dylan was a key member of the 2019 Amherst Steele Baseball team that won the District Championship, losing to the eventual State Champion, St. Ignatius, in the Sweet Sixteen. He has been on the Academic Honor Roll his first 3 years of High School. Dylan is a 3-year varsity letter winner in Baseball.

I would like to thank my family for always believing and supporting me along the way. My friends for understanding and encouraging me to stay focused on my goals. My coaches and teachers that have dedicated their time to train and develop the person I am today. Lastly, the coaches at Ohio Dominican University for giving me the opportunity to continue my academic and athletic careers.

McKenzie Cornwell, University of Akron, Softball
Following her High School Career, McKenzie will continue her academic and athletic careers at the University of Akron, an NCAA Division I school in the Mid-American Conference.  Through her first two years as a player, McKenzie has a .430 Batting Average, .607 Slugging Percentage, with 73 Hits, 46 RBIs, 47 singles, 23 Doubles, and 2 Homeruns. As a Freshman, she was named 1st Team All-Southwestern Conference as a Freshman and Honorable Mention All-Lorain County.  As a sophomore, she was name 2nd Team All-Southwestern Conference and 2nd Team All-Lorain County. McKenzie is a member of National Honor Society. She has been on the Academic Honor Roll her first 3 years of High School. McKenzie is a 4-year varsity letter winner in Softball.

People McKenzie would like to thank:
Thank you to my family for spending countless hours at the fields and driving all over for tournaments. I would like to specifically shoutout to my sisters, Lindsay and Cailyn: thank you for being my best friends and supporting me. I’ll miss you guys so much next year.

Katelyn (K.K.) Hazelgrove, Cleveland State University, Women’s Soccer
Following her High School Career, K.K. will continue her academic and athletic careers at Cleveland State University, an NCAA Division I school in the Horizon League.  K.K. was predominantly a defensive player in her career at Steele, earning the team Defensive MVP Award this year. As a senior, she was named 1st Team All-Lorain County, Honorable Mention All-Greater Cleveland, and Honorable Mention All-Southwestern Conference. K.K. scored 1 goal (a game winner) with 2 assists in her career. She spent her Sophomore and Junior seasons playing for the USA Soccer Developmental Academy. K.K. has letter in Girls Soccer and Track & Field.

My mom- for all the long drives, support, and endless hours spent to get me to where I’m at today All my coaches- for pushing me to play to my fullest potential and for the training it took to get me to this point.

Sydney Schaeffer, Bowling Green State University, Women’s Soccer
Following her High School Career, Sydney. will continue her academic and athletic careers at Bowling Green State University, an NCAA Division I school in the Mid-American Conference. She finished her career with 28 goals and 22 assists. During her career, Sydney was named 2nd Team All-Southwestern Conference two times, Honorable Mention All-Southwestern Conference, 1st Team All-Lorain County, and Honorable Mention All-Greater Cleveland.  She spent her Sophomore season playing for the USA Soccer Developmental Academy. Sydney is a 3-year letter winner in Girls Soccer.
